The Rotary Valley of the Sun Passport Club will be hosting two distinguished Rotarians on 6 p.m. Sept. 9 via Zoom, where they will discuss current projects in Afghanistan.
Motivated by the tragedy of September 11, Rotarians Steve Brown and Fary Moini have traveled to Afghanistan numerous times since 2002 working with various programs of the Rotary Foundation and other partnering organizations to carry out educational and humanitarian programs in the City of Jalalabad. 
Although things have changed dramatically with the fall of the Afghan national government, the two will discuss successes continuing at this time working with local Afghan community leaders in supporting internet connected computer labs in public high schools in Jalalabad where more than 50,000 Afghan students have participated in the last 19 years.
Zoom calls continue to take place between students in Jalalabad and students in the United States. They also continue to support an Afghan high school sports programs and Rotary’s polio eradication efforts in the province where Jalalabad is located.
Steve and Fary remain in daily touch with his colleagues in Afghanistan and will share with Rotarians how things have evolved and the challenges facing Afghans today.

Steve was a partner in the law firm of Luce, Forward, Hamilton & Scripps from 1972 until his retirement several years ago. A Rotarian since 1986, he is a Charter Member of the La Jolla Golden Triangle Rotary Club. Steve served District 5340 Governor in 1995-96, The Rotary Foundation as trustee 2010-14 and vice chair of the foundation in 2012-13.
He has served as member of various committees at Rotary headquarters. Since 2002, he has been working as a volunteer on projects in Afghanistan through the current time. He also has been involved since 2012 in supporting efforts addressing transboundary water challenges facing the countries sharing the Aral Sea Basin centered in Central Asia—Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Iran and Afghanistan, Steve has secured funding through The Rotary Foundation for projects in numerous countries around the world and has traveled extensively to help support international service through Rotary.
Fary has a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Tehran, Iran, and is a former director of nursing at the Iranian Medical Center, Dubai, UAE, where she managed a workforce of more than 350 nurses and technicians across two hospitals.
She was the Rotary International Representative to the U.S. National Commission to UNESCO (2005–2010).
